pH Test Strips

In order to test your body’s pH level, you need to purchase pH test strips. You can buy these strips in a variety of places such as online or at a local health store. You can purchase them in amounts anywhere from 60 to 360 strips. They range from about $5-$30, which is a pretty good deal considering how many strips you get.

The great thing about pH test strips is that they can give you instant feedback about how your diet and lifestyle are affecting your health. You should test your pH often to see how what you are eating and the amount of exercise you are getting are affecting your pH level.

There are two types of test strips; saliva and urine. Ideally, urine pH levels should be somewhere between 6.5 and 7.5. The pH of urine tends to fluctuate more than saliva and is usually lower in the morning and higher at night. Saliva should have a pH of between 6.8 and 7.2.

Before doing a saliva pH test, you should make sure you haven’t brushed your teeth nor had anything to eat or drink for a half hour prior to testing. You should also swallow a few times before you test in order to allow saliva to build up in your mouth. Lastly, you may want to discharge the saliva onto a plastic spoon because the paper is usually toxic, so you don’t want to touch your tongue on it. For the urine pH test you should also not eat or drink anything for a half hour before you test.

PH test strips come with an easy to read color chart. After you immerse the strip in either your urine or saliva, you will either put the included solution on it, or it will change color on its own (depending on the kind of strips you have). Then the strip will change color and you can consult the chart to see what your pH is.

Alkaline vs. Acidic

Because a majority of Americans live on processed foods that have been stripped of essential nutrients, most of us could use more alkaline food in our diets. Alkaline foods are higher than 7.0 on the pH scale and higher than zero on the relative pH scale.

The majority of alkalizing foods are vegetables. According to Dr. Robert Young’s relative pH scale, cucumbers, sprouts, wheatgrass, and barley grass are a few of the most alkalizing foods on the planet. These foods are all close to 30.0 on the relative pH scale. Cabbage, celery, garlic, spinach, tomatoes, avocados, fresh soybeans, and lemons are also very alkaline. They range from about 10.0-15.0 on the relative pH scale.

On the other end of the spectrum are foods that are very acidic. Pork, beef, vinegar, liquor, and processed fruit juice are all below negative 30.0 on the relative pH scale. Also close to negative 30.0 are beer, coffee, tea, and chocolate. Chicken, eggs, hard cheese, and white sugar are all in between -15.0 and -20.0

When trying to adjust your diet to include more alkaline foods, you should do it gradually instead of all at once. Making too many changes to your diet at one time can be very overwhelming and it is much harder to stick with instant changes for a long period of time.

Instead of the all at once approach; try introducing just one or two new alkalizing foods into your diet at a time. For instance, you could try incorporating tomatoes and cucumbers into your meals more often. Or you could try drinking green tea two or three times a week.

After you have become accustomed to a few alkaline foods, you can begin to think about cutting down slightly on acidic foods. It is a lot easier to simply cut back on acidic foods instead of trying to abandon them altogether. When you begin to eat or drink less and less of an acidic substance, you can then start to think about taking it out of your diet completely.

The pH Scale

The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. 7.0 is considered neutral, so anything below that number is acidic and anything above is alkaline. The pH scale is also logarithmic, meaning that each sequential number is ten times more alkaline than the previous number.

Knowing what your body’s pH level and knowing where certain foods are at on the pH scale can help make you a healthier person. You can easily test your pH level by purchasing ph test strips. You should test often so you can get instant feedback on how your current diet is affecting your health.

Keep in mind that your body is always fighting to keep your pH at around 7.3, so eating acidic foods and drinking acidic drinks all the time puts more stress on your body and will eventually diminish your overall health. On the other hand, eating alkaline foods and drinking alkaline drinks will eventually restore your health.

The most alkalizing foods are in between 8.5 and 9.0 on the pH scale. These include watermelon, mango, dried dates and figs, parsley, and seedless grapes. Foods between a 7.5 to 8.0 pH are moderately alkaline. Apples, avocados, bananas, lettuce, sea salt, and berries are all close to 8.0, while bell peppers, oranges, potatoes, fresh corn, and strawberries are all around 7.5. Foods with slightly alkaline to neutral pH include almonds, chestnuts, egg yolks, tomatoes, and pickles.

Moving down the scale from neutral to slightly acid, you will find foods like cashews, real butter, crackers, cheese, dried beans, and egg whites. Foods between a 6.0 to 6.5 pH are considered moderately acidic. Examples of foods in this range include breads, fish, pasta, peanuts, and ketchup. Finally, at the bottom of the pH scale are the extremely acidic foods such as chicken, chocolate, white rice, beef, sugar, and pork.

Alkalize Your Diet

Because a majority of Americans live on processed foods that have been stripped of essential nutrients, most of us could use more alkaline food in our diets. Alkaline foods are higher than 7.0 on the pH scale. Your blood’s optimal pH level should be slightly alkaline at 7.365 pH. This means that the body functions best when the majority of your diet consists of alkaline foods.

When you begin to eat or drink less and less of an acidic substance, you can then start to think about taking it out of your diet completely, if you wish.

If you are looking for alkaline recipes, you should check out Dr. Young’s book called the ph miracle . It is packed full of useful information in addition to the delicious recipes. You might also want to consider purchasing an alkalizing water filter. Drinking this water can work wonders for low pH levels because it is much more alkaline than tap or filtered water.

Are You Getting Enough Alkaline?

Are you getting enough alkaline food in your diet? Dr. Robert Young believes that, for a majority of Americans, the answer is no. Typically, the ideal diet should consist of 75-80% alkaline foods and 20-25% acidic foods. For many of us, myself included, our diets are actually much closer 75% acid and 25% alkaline.

Consuming alkaline foods is critical to your health. As Dr. Young has stated, “regulating your body’s acid/alkaline chemistry through simple changes in diet can result in weight loss, increased stamina and strength, a stronger immune system and a greater sense of well being.” This is why it is important to consume about 3-4 times as much alkaline foods as acidic foods.

It can be difficult to eat a lot of alkaline foods because acidic foods are typically much more appealing and tasty to most people. Luckily, Dr. Young and his wife, Shelley, have written a book called “The pH Miracle.” This book is full of alkaline recipes that taste good and are also good for you.

The recipes in the book include a variety main dishes, salads, snacks, desserts, shakes, drinks, & sauces. So, for example, for a meal you could have Romaine Peppered Salad, Rawsome Redford Pizza, Fresh Silky Almond Milk to drink, and Super Soy Pudding for dessert. All of these recipes fit in with the 80% alkaline, 20% acid ph miracle  diet.

In addition to meals, there are also many alkaline foods you can snack on. Certain nuts like almonds, hazel, macadamia, pecan, pine, pumpkin, walnuts, and sunflower seeds are very alkaline and are rich in protein, minerals, fats, and vitamins. Taking a bag of these kinds of nuts to work and snacking on them throughout the day is a great way to alkalize your diet.

Another thing you can do to raise your pH level is drink alkaline water. There are special filters out there that alkalize and filter water. This type of water is much more alkaline than regular water. Dr. Young also sells this kind of water in bottles. Purchasing a regular water filter will also make your water more alkaline. It will not be quite as high on the pH scale as alkaline water, but it will still be better for you than regular tap water.

If you just can’t get enough alkaline foods in your diet, you may want to think about taking supplements. There are several product out there such as liquid chlorophyll, iron, calcium, and magnesium, that make your body more alkaline.
